8 Twisty Books to Read After Verity by Colleen Hoover
If you still think about that attic scene from Verity at 2 AM… welcome. You’re among friends. Colleen Hoover’s psychological thriller messed with our minds in the best (worst?) way possible—and now that the Verity movie is officially in the works with Amazon MGM Studios, it’s the perfect time to keep that high-stakes, secrets-on-secrets energy going.
Haven’t read it yet? Or need a refresher? Here’s my original review of Verity, where I try to process that ending without combusting.
Now, let’s talk about what to read next if you’re chasing that same mix of obsession, manipulation, and slow-burning dread. These eight books will keep your brain spiraling and your jaw on the floor.

Books to Read After Verity

The Wife Before by Shanora Williams
A woman falls for a wealthy man with a tragic past… and quickly realizes she’s not the first to be lured into his mountain mansion. This one is giving Rebecca meets Verity energy—with red flags waving like parade banners.
Key themes: unreliable narrator, isolated mansion, secrets from a dead wife

The Ghostwriter by A.R. Torre
A bestselling author with a squeaky-clean public image is hiding one hell of a skeleton in her closet—and with her time running out, she decides to finally tell the truth. The setup is pure Verity: a mysterious manuscript, a hidden past, and a legacy on the line.
Key themes: secret confession, morally gray female lead, author with a dark past

An Honest Lie by Tarryn Fisher
From one of CoHo’s co-authors comes this paranoia-laced thriller set during a Vegas girls’ trip gone very, very wrong. There’s a cult. There’s trauma. There’s the kind of slow-build dread that’ll have you side-eyeing every text message.
Key themes: cult trauma, woman in danger, dark secrets from the past

The Turn of the Key by Ruth Ware
A nanny takes a job in a “smart house” that’s more Black Mirror than Nanny McPhee. When a child ends up dead, she’s left writing her side of the story from prison. Think Verity, but instead of a creepy manuscript, it’s glitchy tech and a nanny who may or may not be telling the truth.
Key themes: nanny thriller, isolated house, unreliable narrator, tech paranoia

The Woman by the Lake by Kristen Ashley
Grief, isolation, and a possibly haunted lakeside cabin? Nadia just wants peace, but instead she gets scratched windows, a grumpy-hot neighbor, and small-town secrets. It’s got the Verity trifecta: murder, manuscript-worthy mystery, and a creeping sense that nothing is what it seems.
Key themes: grief, remote setting, ghostly rumors, enemies to lovers

The Housemaid by Freida McFadden
Millie takes a job as a live-in maid for the seemingly perfect Winchester family—until the locked door upstairs, the suspicious wife, and her own secrets turn it into a powder keg. Fast-paced, bingeable, and disturbing in the best way.
Key themes: domestic suspense, secretive employer, class tension

The House in the Pines by Ana Reyes
Maya returns to her sleepy hometown to face down the unexplained death of her best friend—a death eerily similar to one she witnessed years before. Eerie atmosphere, memory gaps, and a slow descent into obsession.

Bonus Pick: The Witch of Willow Hall by Hester Fox
If you’re down to mix your thrills with a bit of gothic magic, this one’s got you. After fleeing scandal in Boston, Lydia and her sisters arrive at a haunted country estate in 1820s Massachusetts—where family secrets, witchy powers, and something sinister in the attic (sound familiar?) are waiting.
Key themes: witchy family secrets, haunted house, historical gothic atmosphere

The Verity Movie Is Officially Happening
Yep, it’s real—and the cast is stacked. Dakota Johnson will star as Lowen, the down-on-her-luck writer who lands the world’s most cursed ghostwriting gig. And none other than Anne Hathaway is stepping into the chilling role of Verity Crawford. Directed by Michael Showalter, the film is being produced by Amazon MGM Studios and will hit theaters (no streaming-only deal here).
Colleen Hoover shared her excitement on Instagram, calling it her dream cast. Between the suspense, the is-it-a-confession-or-fiction manuscript, and Hathaway’s range, we are not emotionally ready for this adaptation.
Want to refresh the chaos before the movie drops? Here’s my Verity review—I promise it’s spoiler-free (ish).
